Relationship OCD (ROCD) is a form of OCD in which obsessive doubts and intrusive thoughts are focused on a romantic relationship. People with ROCD experience relentless questioning — 'Do I really love them?', 'Are they right for me?', 'Would I be happier with someone else?', 'Am I staying out of obligation rather than love?' — that feels completely unlike normal relationship uncertainty. It is experienced as urgent, important, and requiring resolution. It never resolves through reassurance or analysis, because it is not a relationship problem. It is an anxiety disorder.
Normal relationship doubt is occasional, proportionate, and resolves with time or conversation. ROCD doubt is relentless, ego-dystonic (it doesn't feel like 'you'), and never resolves despite extensive analysis. It is often accompanied by physical anxiety symptoms — chest tightness, nausea, racing heart — when the doubts are active. The anxiety itself is the diagnostic clue: this level of distress about a question is OCD, not insight.
The most common ROCD compulsion is seeking reassurance — from the partner, from friends, from Google, from oneself. Each reassurance provides brief relief followed by the same doubt returning, often stronger. Partners become exhausted by constant requests for reassurance. Relationships suffer. And the OCD deepens. Stopping reassurance-seeking is necessary for recovery — but sustainable only when the underlying anxiety disorder is being addressed.
Important
"ROCD is not the same as realising a relationship is genuinely wrong. Relationship OCD typically afflicts people in good relationships and is most intense with partners the sufferer cares deeply about. The doubt is a symptom, not information."
ROCD responds to exactly the same recovery process as all OCD: addressing the sensitised amygdala driving the obsessional cycle. As amygdala sensitisation reduces through The Linden Method, the doubts lose their urgency and emotional intensity, the compulsion to seek reassurance diminishes, and the person is able to be present in their relationship without the OCD overlay. Many ROCD sufferers find their relationships recover significantly as their anxiety does.

The Linden Method uses Threat Recalibration Therapy (TRT™), a structured process designed to recalibrate the automatic threat response that keeps anxiety active. Its focus is the response behind persistent fear, rather than managing each symptom separately. Explore the explanation, evaluation and real recovery experiences, or go straight to the program options.
See the reported outcomes: the evaluation cohort’s average anxiety score moved from 18.28 (severe) to 2.84 (minimal). Read the evaluation for the study details, alongside clients’ own accounts of recovery.

Anxiety can feel like an alarm that has forgotten the danger is over. The Linden Method explains what keeps that alarm switched on — and the process for deactivating it.

Panic disorder took hold of my life in my early twenties. It started with one episode on the motorway that I couldn't explain — and within months I had reorganised my entire life around avoiding anything that might trigger another one.
I stopped driving. I stopped travelling alone. I narrowed my world down to what felt safe, and then found that the 'safe' zone kept shrinking. I saw it happening and felt powerless to stop it.
I tried CBT, breathing exercises, medication. They gave me tools, but the tools never addressed what was underneath. Every time the techniques failed in a real situation, I felt worse than before.
The Linden Method gave me something none of those approaches had — an explanation. Once I understood what my brain was actually doing, the panic became something I could understand rather than something I had to flee from. Recovery followed naturally from that understanding.
I now coach others through panic disorder and agoraphobia specifically, because I know what it costs — the relationships, the freedom, the years — and I want to help people get those things back as quickly as possible.
"You don't need to white-knuckle your way through anxiety. You need to understand it. Once you do, everything changes."

I suffered from health anxiety for over fifteen years. It began with a health scare in my forties that, once resolved medically, somehow refused to resolve in my mind. Every new symptom became a potential catastrophe. Every normal bodily sensation became something to investigate.
I spent years in doctors' offices seeking reassurance that would only ever last a few days before the next worry surfaced. My GP was kind and patient. But the reassurance never stuck — because the problem wasn't a lack of information, it was a nervous system stuck in threat-detection mode.
My family struggled to understand why the reassurance never seemed to be enough. I struggled to understand it too.
The Linden Method explained, for the first time, why reassurance-seeking makes health anxiety worse rather than better — and what to do instead. Within a matter of weeks, the constant vigilance began to ease. I was able to notice a sensation in my body without it immediately triggering a spiral.
I now work with many clients in their forties, fifties, and beyond — people who have lived with anxiety for a long time and have sometimes given up believing full recovery is possible at their stage of life. It absolutely is.
"It is never too late to recover. And recovery, when it comes, feels nothing like you expected — it feels like the return of ordinary, quiet peace."
