A panic attack feels like the worst thing you've ever experienced. Your heart races, you can't breathe, you're convinced something catastrophic is happening — but nothing is. Through a process called fear sensitisation, this alarm centre lowers its threshold and fires more readily, producing full panic responses to completely safe situations.
